This series consists of correspondence files. The records include letters received and copies of letters sent; reports; standard forms; census records; circulars; lists of students; birth and death certificates; financial records; mortgages; and leases. The records contain copies of the Winnebago Agency and Santee Agency annual reports, including narrative and statistical sections. The records include advertisements related to the sale of Indian land; weekly reports of the Agency farmer; testimony related to liquor and bootlegging; and a book about peyote, published by the Chilocco Indian School. Topics covered in the records include education; off-reservation boarding schools; agriculture and exhibitions; finance; banks; legal matters; Indian allotments; births and deaths; Indian warehouses; agricultural extension work; the sale of liberty bonds; appropriations; taxation; cyclone damage; and inheritance and succession. The records include correspondence with the American National Red Cross; the Sac and Fox Sanatorium; the Santee Normal Training School; the Commissioner of Indian Affairs; and the Department of the Treasury.

Chilocco Indian Agricultural School

The Chilocco Indian School was a non-reservation boarding school established by the Office of Indian Affairs for the vocational education of Indian children. In operation for nearly a century (1884-1980), the school drew students from over 40 tribes. Enrollment ranged from slightly over 100 during the first year to well over 1,000 in 1931.
